Statistical Methods for Biological Dosimetry
نویسنده
چکیده
Statistical methods most commonly employed at HPA for purposes of biological dosimetry by analysis of chromosomal aberrations in blood lymphocytes are reviewed and discussed together with worked examples. They serve to illustrate practical aspects of the techniques. A novel method of computation of dose and the corresponding 95% limits, taking into account both the Poisson derived uncertainties in induced aberration yield as well as uncertainties associated with the calibration curve, is presented. A very good agreement of the latter approach with a more simplified one, which merely takes into consideration the Poisson uncertainties in yield, further validates the approximations used over many years for dose assessment.

A Novel Biological Dosimetry Method for Monitoring Occupational Radiation Exposure in Diagnostic and Therapeutic Wards: From Radiation Dosimetry to Biological Effects
Background and Objective: Professional radiation workers are occupationally exposed to long-term low levels of ionizing radiation. Occupational health hazards from radiation exposure, in a large occupational segment of the population, are of special concern. Biological dosimetry can be performed in addition to physical dosimetry with the aim of individual dose assessment and biological effects....
متن کاملAlternative statistical methods for cytogenetic radiation biological dosimetry
The paper presents alternative statistical methods for biological dosimetry, such as the Bayesian and Monte Carlo method. The classical Gaussian and robust Bayesian fit algorithms for the linear, linear-quadratic as well as saturated and critical calibration curves are described. The Bayesian model selection algorithm for those curves is also presented. In addition, five methods of dose estimat...
متن کاملEstimation of Absorbed Doses on the Basis of Cytogenetic Methods
Long-term studies in the field of radiation cytogenetics have resulted in the discovery of relationship between induction of chromosome aberrations and the type of ionizing radiation, their intensity and dose. This has served as a basis of biological dosimetry as an area of application of the revealed relationship, and has been used in the practice to estimate absorbed doses in people exposed t...

The growing use of ionizing radiation in various sectors of industry, medicine, agriculture and research has increased the risk of radiation exposure of staff and people. Ionizing radiation as a strong clastogen can cause different types of DNA damages and chromosomal aberrations. Biological dosimetry, based on the cytogenetic analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes has a wide application in d...
